Bright Hope Laurel United Methodist Church Apple Butter Festival
The courtyard between the Ebbs Chapel Community Center and the Bright Hope Laurel United Methodist Church brings the Upper Laurel community and its guests together each year for various events including two major community festivals.

In July of each year the Ebbs Chapel Community Center sponsors the Blackberry Festival.  The festival features sales of local craftsmen in fabric and wood; artists in oil, watercolor, and other media; books by Madison County authors;  new and old lightly used kitchen and household goods as well as used furniture; and food items such as the blackberry jam, blackberry sauce, and blackberry cobbler that give the festival its name.  Music -- live or recorded -- fills the air.  Games or activities for children are provided by volunteers.  Breakfast and lunch are served in the lunch room.  Residents of the community and their guests gather to exchange the latest news, engage in the gentle commerce that marks community exchange, discuss the fascinating items available from vendors, listen to the music, and share the meals served by volunteers.  Proceeds support the Community Center’s activities.

September of each year finds the Apple Butter Festival, sponsored by the Bright Hope Laurel United Methodist Church, the Community Center’s neighboring institution.  Similar activities characterize the festival, this time celebrating the fall’s harvest of apples transformed into various apple-based food items, most notably apple butter prepared by the cooks of Upper Laurel.  This is no ordinary apple butter, but is
made the old fashioned mountain way over wood fired caldrons with lots of stirring by dedicated cooks with years of experience at this fall rite.

In addition, the Center hosts periodic community yard sales offering residents’ no-longer used items to others.  Watch for announcements of these events on our facebook page.

Finally, benefit turkey shoots and similar events call the neighborhood together to assist needy community members with such aid as winter heating assistance.  Or perhaps the events assist those suffering momentary misfortunes requiring the support of the full community.  Once again these events are announced on our facebook page.

All are invited to meet your neighbors and join us for the fun, fellowship, and friendly commerce of these community gatherings. Or contact us to become one of our vendors.  Offer your crafts, arts, books, the fruit of your garden or orchard, or just your unwanted household items to your neighbors at the Ebbs Chapel festivals.
