Why does an
old refrigerator sit at the entry to the Ebbs
Chapel Community Center courtyard?
In the fall of 2022, Upper Laurel resident Lydia
Dunch approached the Board of the Upper Laurel
Community Organization offering to establish an exchange library in the community. With
the Board's encouragement she developed the idea
into the Bijou Book Box.
The exchange library movement is based on patrons bringing a book to contribute in exchange for a book they find in the library that they want to read. A small weather-protected box
(an old refrigerator is a clever choice) is
located at a common place in the community and
stocked with a variety of books: fiction and
non-fiction, for various age groups, tenderly
used, but endorsed by their readers.
Find a book on your shelf that you love
enough to share with the broader community.
On your next trip to work or school or shopping or
even a Community Center event, stop by and donate
your book to the library and pick up your next
reading. Only books by the
way; no other media please.
The Bijou Book Box is open to all.
PS: Don't forget to close the refrigerator door to
keep the collection safe from the elements.
And we urge you to recommend the convenience of the
Bijou Book Box to your friends.
